Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia exposed corruption and wrongdoing in Malta before she was assassinated by those she sought to bring to justice. Her death resulted in major criminal trials and a book written by her youngest son, Paul, published in 2023. The book is an homage to the power of journalism to expose wrongdoing and hold the powerful to account, as well as a moving tribute to a mother. Both Daphne’s use of the Panama Papers and Paul’s work before her death sought to reveal the use of international networks and finance to defeat national laws, something Martinson has also pursued in her own investigation into the use of offshore funds and the law to defeat disclosure. In an interview about his writing and more, this session will cover the power of investigative journalism and the fallout of her untimely death.
