Trust is foundational to journalism, yet today, trust in journalism is at an all-time low as traditional business models that once underpinned news organizations continue to struggle. While much has been said about the decline of legacy media, independent, nonpartisan news organizations are more important than ever. Hear from AP’s Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace, Executive Editor of the Dallas Morning News Katrice Hardy, Editor at Large of Outlier Media Sarah Alvarez and President and Publisher of the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Andrew Morse about how news organizations can build and sustain trust with their audiences; the importance of fact-based journalism; and how the industry must adapt to shifting media consumption habits.

Sarah Alvarez

Sarah Alvarez is the founder and editor-at-large of Outlier Media, a Detroit-based service journalism organization identifying and filling information, accountability and connection gaps in Detroit. The newsroom identifies, reports, and delivers valuable information to equip Detroiters to hold people and systems accountable for harm and to contribute to a thriving community. Outlier’s core product is an SMS service that texts critical info to residents and connects them directly with reporters. Her methodologies are now being used by journalism organizations across the world. Before founding Outlier Media in 2015 as a JSK Fellow at Stanford University, she worked in civil rights law, nonprofit management, and public radio.
