This session provides a short guide to the fundamentals of good safety practice, and introduces journalists and editors to the practical safety sessions available at this year's festival. These include one-to-one clinics offered free by the ACOS Alliance in partnership with leading experts in security, risk assessment, legal, digital and psychosocial safety. Moderated by Elisabet Cantenys.

Elisabet Cantenys

Elisabet Cantenys is the Executive Director of the ACOS Alliance, a coalition of more than 125 news organizations, freelance journalist associations and press freedom NGOs working together to champion safe and responsible journalistic practices. Elisabet has led the Alliance since 2016, managing the organisation’s growth and strategy, overseeing its global partnerships and leading a rich programme of activities. Prior to joining the ACOS Alliance Elisabet had more than a decade of experience working on freelance safety issues and cultivating a collaborative approach to these. As former Head of Programmes at the Rory Peck Trust, in London, she oversaw, managed and implemented more than a dozen journalist safety projects worldwide. Cantenys has also worked as a freelance documentary producer, radio journalist and writer in New York, London and Barcelona. Chris Lawton

Chris Lawton is the co founder and director of MiRiskMedia and Silk Road Training. Alongside over 10 years experience of providing support to journalists around the world he has also consulted widely within the INGO and aid sector, most recently as the Global Security Director for Save The Children. He has an expertise in providing security support within the context of shrinking civil spaces and believes in raising global safety standards for all journalists and media workers within high threat environments.

Alexander Papachristou is Executive Director of the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, an international public interest law program of the New York City Bar Association, providing pro bono legal support to human rights, environmental, and investigative journalism organizations worldwide. He is the former president of the Near East Foundation, which empowers vulnerable communities in the Middle East and Africa to overcome conflict, migration, and climate change. Alexander lived in Russia from 1989 to 1993, where he opened and ran the Moscow office of White & Case and wrote a column for the Moscow Times. From 1994 to 2007, he served as managing director and general counsel at NCH Capital, Inc. He also was board member and acting US CEO of Spinevision, a French company.
