What's missing in the global AI conversation? While newsrooms in the Global North capitalise on advanced tools and infrastructure, those in the Global South face a different reality. However, the Groundtruth Project's 2024 global assessment reveals an unexpected truth: limited access and resource constraints are paradoxically driving some of the most innovative applications of AI in journalism.
Innovation born from necessity. From Venezuela to Jordan, newsrooms are reimagining AI's role. At Armando.info, where journalists face daily threats, AI powers voice-overs in investigative pieces, protecting reporter identities while maintaining impact. These aren't just workarounds – they're ingenious solutions that emerge when traditional paths aren't an option.
The numbers tell a story: 73% of surveyed newsrooms report tackling previously impossible investigations with even basic AI tools, 89% of Global South newsrooms are eager to embrace AI yet only 34% have access to proper training.
This isn't just a digital divide; it's an opportunity gap driving unorthodox solutions.
Panel goals:
> Explore how constraints drive innovation in Global South newsrooms.
> Share real-world examples of culturally adapted AI solutions.
> Propose actionable strategies for inclusive AI adoption in journalism.
> Address the training gap with practical, scalable solutions.

Palazzo Graziani (Perugia)
Palazzo Graziani (Perugia)
