Eliza Anyangwe
Eliza Anyangwe is Managing Editor of CNN’s multi-award-winning gender inequality reporting team As Equals, and co-founder of The Gender Beat, a collaborative project to promote nuanced, impactful gender journalism and build a supportive community for those who produce it, particularly in the Majority World. Before joining CNN in February 2021, she was Managing Editor of The Correspondent, a platform for constructive, member-funded, ad-free journalism. Eliza has spoken about gender, journalism or international development on stages from SXSW to TED Global; has written for Open Democracy, Al Jazeera and the FT, and has appeared on Newsnight, BBC World Service, PRI’s The World and Our Body Politic, among others. She is a contributing author to Africa’s Media Image in the 21st Century, published by Routledge.
James Ball
James Ball is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster and author, fellow of the think-tank Demos, and the political editor of The New European. He has worked as the global editor of TBIJ, a special correspondent at BuzzFeed UK and special projects editor at The Guardian, where he played a key role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the NSA leaks by Edward Snowden, as well as the offshore leaks, HSBC Files, Reading the Riots and Keep it in the Ground projects. At WikiLeaks he was closely involved in Cablegate – the publication of 250,000 classified US embassy cables in 2010 – as well as working on two documentaries based on the Iraq War Logs. James is the author of multiple books, including Post-Truth and The Tangled Web We Weave: Inside The Shadow System That Shapes the Internet. His most recent book, The Other Pandemic: How Qanon Contaminated The World was published by Bloomsbury in July 2023. He writes an occasional newsletter, Techtris, on tech, policy and politics.
Lucas Batt
Lucas Batt is an independent media consultant and co-founder of Greater Community Media, a new initiative dedicated to supporting the development of community-centred media. As a founding member of the paid staff team of The Bristol Cable, a community-owned investigative newspaper, over seven years he played a key role in its growth, leading efforts in organisational development, revenue generation, membership, and community engagement. He later coordinated Reference, a European network of pioneering independent news publishers, where he facilitated collaboration and knowledge exchange between newsroom leaders. Now Lucas works with organisations in the UK and independent media across Europe, helping them build sustainable business models and strengthen their relationships with the communities they serve.
