Irena Pozar took over Swedish magazine Veckorevyn in 2019, transforming it from a glossy mag about fashion, makeup and celebrities (and known for founding the Miss Sweden beauty contest) to an all-digital venture which regularly wins awards for its investigative reporting, with exposés on everything from the state of maternity care to sexual assaults in juvenile institutions. Teen Vogue leads the way on topics such as immigration, race, wellness and politics for a socially conscious young audience, its shift from fashion bible to social activism strengthening the brand. Both outlets show how magazines previously associated with superficial coverage of beauty and makeup are now building entire communities of civic-minded young women hungry for change.
But is it only a success story? gal-dem, a widely praised magazine platforming the perspectives of people of colour from marginalised genders, was forced to fold in 2023 due to budget challenges. In its parting message it urged the mainstream media to improve how it engages with their stories.
This panel will hear about why the progressive transformation of young women’s magazines matters, how these outlets are building an audience that’s willing to read their stories and support their message, and what more needs to be done by mainstream media to listen to this audience.
