Caoilfhionn Gallagher
Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC is an international human rights lawyer and expert in journalists’ safety and media freedom, practising as a barrister from Doughty Street Chambers, London. Over the past 20 years she has acted in many landmark human rights cases in the UK and internationally, before the European Court of Human Rights, international courts and UN bodies. She has acted for, and secured the freedom of, many arbitrarily detained journalists, cartoonists, peaceful protestors and human rights defenders around the world, including in Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Caoilfhionn has particular expertise in accountability for crimes against journalists. Her current cases in this field include leading the international legal teams for media owner Jimmy Lai, imprisoned in Hong Kong; for over 150 BBC News Persian journalists, targeted extraterritorially by Iran; for the bereaved family of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, assassinated in Malta in 2017; and leading (join...
Christine Glancey
Christine Glancey is executive editor of Rest of World, with responsibility for managing and overseeing daily coverage from around the world. Previously, she served as a deputy editor for standards at the Wall Street Journal, including creating and advising newsroom-wide initiatives on generative AI strategy, deep fake forensics, and reader trust R&D. Christine holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from St. John’s University and a Master of Arts from Columbia University. She is a passionate advocate for readers and championing young journalists and serves on the advisory board of St. John’s University Journalism Department. She has also served on the board of the Dow Jones Foundation and the International Center for Journalists.
Ken Roth
Kenneth Roth is the Charles and Marie Robertson Visiting Professor at the Princeton School for Public and International Affairs. Until August 2022, he served for nearly three decades as the executive director of Human Rights Watch, one of the worldâs leading international human rights organizations, which operates in some 100 countries. Before that, Roth was a federal prosecutor in New York and for the Iran-Contra investigation in Washington. A graduate of Yale Law School and Brown University, Roth has conducted numerous human rights investigative and advocacy missions around the world, meeting with dozens of heads of state and countless ministers. He is quoted widely in the media and has written hundreds of articles on a wide range of human rights issues, devoting special attention to the worldâs most dire situations, the conduct of war, the foreign policies of the major powers, the work of the United Nations, and the global contest between autocracy and democracy. Rothâs first book, Righting Wrongs, was published by Knopf on 25 February 2025. It offers an insiderâs view of the strategies used by Human Rights Watch to put pressure on governments to respect human rights, drawing on his years of experience.
