The MacArthur Foundation has spearheaded the Press Forward initiative to raise $1bn for local journalism in the US. Why are US philanthropists putting so much energy into local news? Can local news leaders in other parts of the world use this as an inspiration to create similar funds? And what is the role of philanthropy in local journalism anyway – have we given up on finding a business model?

Jonathan Heawood
Jonathan Heawood cares about journalism that cares about people. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Public Interest News Foundation, the first charity in the UK with a mandate to support public interest news. He previously launched and ran IMPRESS, the UK’s independent press regulator. He started his career as a journalist at the Observer newspaper and has also held leadership roles at English PEN and the Sigrid Rausing Trust. Alongside his day job, he is Chair of the Stephen Spender Trust and a Research Associate on the Norms for the New Public Sphere project at Stirling University. His first book, The Press Freedom Myth, was published in 2019, and he is now working on a book about media pioneers.
Silvia Rivera
Silvia Rivera is the new Director for Local News at the MacArthur Foundation. She will lead this new portfolio and represent MacArthur in Press Forward. Previously, she worked for Listening Post Collective and Chicago Public Media. Silvia is an accomplished and innovative leader with over two decades of experience leading and building programs and organizations that serve people of color. She has spent most of her career advocating for BIPOC media representation and philanthropic investments in civic media and the arts.
