The Financial Times has consistently been at the forefront of digital publishing. With the emergence of AI we’ve been keen to explore how it may assist with the presentation of our journalism to readers, as well as help us find and discover new stories.
This talk will cover some of the AI experiments run in the FT newsroom, from the creation of our “AI playground”, which we have used to test and develop prompts with FT copy, to the formation of a new computational journalism team, which seeks to use AI to find leads and themes in unstructured data sets.
From AI-powered search to on-site bullet point summaries - and integration into our CMS - this presentation will show the scope and scale of the work we are doing, and shed light on what other newsrooms can do with this technology.

Palazzo Graziani (Perugia)
Costruzione di origine medioevale Palazzo Graziani è stato sottoposto ad interventi che nel corso dei secoli ne hanno modificato ed ampliato la struttura. Situato in Corso Vannucci, l’immobile è sede della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio ed ora anche della nuova Fondazione CARIPERUGIA ARTE. Nel 1895 Annibale Brugnoli realizzò quattro grandi quadri ad olio sulle pareti e quattro grandi dipinti murali sulla volta di quello che successivamente venne chiamato “Salone del Brugnoli”, ancora oggi la sala di maggior pregio dell’intero complesso.
Matthew Garrahan
Matthew Garrahan is head of digital platforms at the Financial Times, where he oversees AI editorial development, and also writes The Monday Interview column. Before that he spent four years as news editor, overseeing the FT's global news operation and leading coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia's war on Ukraine and the UK's political crisis. He was previously global media editor, based in New York and then London, and Los Angeles correspondent. Matthew has twice won Business Journalist of the Year at the UK Press Awards and also won for Arts and Entertainment reporting at the British Journalism Awards. He won scoop of the year at the Society of Business Editors and Writers and has been recognised by the Los Angeles Press Club and the Newhouse School Mirror Awards.
