Three quarters of the journalists who died in 2023 were Palestinians killed by Israel during the Israel-Gaza war. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, more journalists died in the first 10 weeks of the war than have ever been killed in a single country in an entire year. So, why did international solidarity for Gazan colleagues feel so lacking and what does this mean for local journalists and international news outlets in the region in the months and years to come? Shuruq As'ad
With 30 years of journalism experience, Shuruq As'ad is a pioneering journalist and media trainer based between Jerusalem and Ramallah. She made history as one of the first female journalists and TV anchors on Palestine TV (PBC) after its establishment in 1994 following the Oslo Accords. Shuruq has worked as a correspondent for renowned Arab TV Channels such as Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, LBC, Nile News, and is currently the correspondent for Dubai TV in Palestine and Israel, covering a wide range of hard news stories and features from Palestine. She is also the correspondent for MCD -Radio Montecarlo Addoualiya (France), and the radio representative in Palestine. Her work has covered hard news including demonstrations, intifada updates, Israeli invasions, Palestinian prisoners stories and swaps, Israeli war on Lebanon in 2006, more than five Israeli wars on Gaza, Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, and interviews with political, social and cultural figures. Phil Chetwynd
Phil Chetwynd is the Global News Director of Agence France-Presse (AFP). He leads a newsroom of 1,700 journalists based in over 150 countries. Phil has been responsible for AFP's editorial strategy prioritizing on-the-ground human storytelling in multimedia formats, the development of a world-class video service and an award-winning pivot on climate coverage. He has also made AFP a leading voice in the battle against misinformation. During a long career at AFP, Phil occupied the posts of Global Editor-in-Chief and Chief Asia Editor. He was also a foreign correspondent working in Asia and the Middle East. He began his career in British regional newspapers.
Doja Daoud
Doja Daoud is Middle East and North Africa representative of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Before joining CPJ in March 2022, Daoud worked for the pan-Arab newspaper Al-Araby al-Jadeed as a writer and news editor focusing on press freedom and media monitoring. She also contributed to Lebanese news outlets and co-founded Alternative Press Syndicate, a local union group for journalists.
