This panel discussion will discuss the reasons why the three panelists decided to launch new, local news outlets in three large, global cities, particularly what was missing in their respective news landscapes. Then, they’ll discuss their main challenges and lessons learned in catering to their local audiences, how they define and carry out their editorial strategies, and how they get their journalism to people who need it the most. The panelists will also discuss their business strategies, their business takeaways from other local news outlets in their cities, and how they plan to reach financial sustainability. Christopher Robbins
Christopher Robbins is a co-founder of Hell Gate, a worker-owned local news site covering New York City. He writes about transportation, policing, politics, billionaires, and trash, among other subjects. He has been an editor at Gothamist and New York Public Radio, the city editor at The Village Voice, and has published his work in Streetsblog, New York Magazine, and The New York Times.
Hanaa Tameez
Hanaa’ Tameez is a staff writer for the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University where she covers innovation in the news industry. Hanaa’ was previously the newsletters editor for local media startup WhereBy.Us and the diversity reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Texas, where she covered race, identity and social equity in one of the country’s most conservative counties. Her work has appeared in The Juggernaut, Animal Político, The Wall Street Journal, Americas Quarterly, and other publications. She holds an M.A. from the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism with a concentration in bilingual journalism and a B.A. from Stony Brook University in journalism and Spanish Language & Literature. She speaks English, Spanish, and Urdu.

Mael Vallejo is VP of Content of Capital Digital, a media company based in Mexico. Previously, he was the senior editor of Post Opinión, the Spanish-language opinion section of The Washington Post. He has been deputy editor and editor-in-chief of media outlets like Esquire Latin America, Animal Político, El Universal and Chilango. He was coordinator of the book Colapso México, published by Penguin Random House in 2023.
