Four months into an omnibus election year and the ongoing generative AI revolution, what are the realities of how journalists are encountering the use of deceptive generative AI audio, video and images, as well as the misuse of claims of AI to dismiss real content? Are the fears around AI's impact justified, or are we in another premature deepfake hype cycle? Grounded in the ongoing global work of WITNESS, including the global Deepfakes Rapid Response Force that connects real world deepfake cases to leading media forensic experts, the presentation will provide a primer on the critical usages seen so far and their impact, the roll-out of technical solutions including detection and content authenticity, as well as how legislators and platforms are responding.

Situato in Corso Vannucci, l’immobile è sede della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio ed ora anche della nuova Fondazione CARIPERUGIA ARTE. Nel 1895 Annibale Brugnoli realizzò quattro grandi quadri ad olio sulle pareti e quattro grandi dipinti murali sulla volta di quello che successivamente venne chiamato “Salone del Brugnoli”, ancora oggi la sala di maggior pregio dell’intero complesso.

He is an expert on innovations in preserving trust, authenticity and evidence in an era of increasingly complex audiovisual communication and deception, who has testified to both the US House and Senate on AI and synthetic media and is a TED speaker on how to prepare better for the threat of deepfakes. In 2018, he initiated WITNESS’s Prepare, Don’t Panic initiative around deepfakes and multimodal generative AI - the first globally focused effort to ground these technologies in realities of frontline journalists and human rights defenders and which has directly influenced platform policies, emerging technologies for trust such as the C2PA and public discussion of who and what to prioritize.
