The birthplace of Jesus has long been a subject of both theological tradition and historical scrutiny. While the Gospels of Matthew and Luke place his birth in Bethlehem, other early Christian sources remain silent on the matter. By applying historical-critical methods, this study explores whether Nazareth, rather than Bethlehem, is the more probable birthplace of Jesus and what this debate reveals about early Christian memory and identity formation.
Betlemme o Nazareth? Rivalutare il luogo di nascita di Gesù alla luce delle fonti antiche
Il luogo di nascita di Gesù è stato a lungo oggetto sia della tradizione teologica che dell’esame storico. Mentre i Vangeli di Matteo e Luca collocano la sua nascita a Betlemme, altre fonti cristiane antiche tacciono sulla questione. Applicando metodi storico-critici, lo studio esplora se Nazareth, piuttosto che Betlemme, sia il luogo di nascita di Gesù più probabile e cosa rivela questo dibattito sulla memoria e sulla formazione dell’identità dei primi cristiani.

Marko Marina
Marko Marina is a historian with a Ph.D. in history from the University of Zagreb (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences). He is the author of dozens of articles about early Christianity’s history. He works as a research assistant at the University of Zagreb (Faculty of Croatian Studies) where he teaches courses on the history of Christianity and the Roman Empire. His recent research focuses on Late antique monasticism, especially St. Pachomius and his communities. He is also involved in the bilateral project Saints and Shaping of Religious Identities between the Faculty of Croatian Studies (University of Zagreb), and the Research Center for Comparative History of Religious Orders (University of Dresden).
