The financial challenges facing the news industry have not stopped a takeover frenzy in the last couple of years, from the Observer in London to the LA Times as well as the almost never-ending saga of the Telegraph and Spectator. It’s an issue journalists tend to deny has any impact, until their proprietors change. But what makes a good news owner and why does it matter? The panelists will offer insights into the continuing importance of online traditional news in a world increasingly dominated by social media and Elon Musk.

Branko Brkic

Branko Brkic is Editor-in-Chief of Daily Maverick. Branko started his career by publishing science fiction books in 1984, in what was then Yugoslavia. In the following seven years he went from a project-based book publisher to starting what became Yugoslavia’s biggest privately-owned publishing house. He published in total 62 books, among them The complete works of William Shakespeare, Complete Greek Tragedies and Miroslav’s Gospel, the Serbian nation’s holiest book. He arrived to South Africa in 1991 where he started off in the reproduction business before working his way back to publishing, this time in magazines. In 1998 he launched Timbila, the South African National Parks magazine. In 2001 he launched Brainstorm, the magazine which still dominates the South African IT scene. In 2003 he left ITWeb to pursue other interests and in 2005 he launched the iconic Maverick magazine. In November 2007 he launched his fourth and final magazine, Empire, a media, arts and culture magazine....

Basia Cummings
Basia Cummings

Basia Cummings is the digital editor of The Observer. Before her recent appointment, she was an editor and partner at Tortoise. Since 2019, she was the host of Tortoise’s weekly investigative show, the Slow Newscast, and editor of numerous investigative series including Sweet Bobby, Hoaxed, Into the Dirt, and Hidden Homicides, which was shortlisted for the 2022 Orwell Prize. Her reporting at Tortoise has won numerous awards: in 2023, she investigated the death of a freelance war reporter, in Pig Iron, which won Best Documentary at the British Podcast Awards. In 2021, she made Left to Die, which won the Foreign Press Award for best podcast. Before Tortoise, Basia worked at the Guardian, the UN, and HuffPost UK.

Joshi Herrmann

Joshi Herrmann is the founder and editor-in-chief of Mill Media, a new local news company which publishes in the UK cities of Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool and Birmingham. The model is based on paid subscriptions and delivered via email newsletters. Previously, he worked as a journalist for a decade, including reporting for The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Telegraph and The Evening Standard.
