Popular meme circulating in Arabic on Facebook: parent talking to child, saying “Do not lie or you will grow up to be a CNN reporter.” Western media coverage since the start of the war in Gaza has brought serious questions about impartiality and professionalism to the fore. And while some might consider trust levels amongst Arab audiences to be unimportant, they are because it is not just them and because a lack of trust in Western media is also a lack of trust in a model for professional journalism that permeates media development assistance, training, and a global understanding about what journalism is and does. The panel will deep dive into why - overall - coverage has been deemed lacking and biased and how we can look towards better constructs of foreign coverage fostering peace, understanding and justice.

Shuruq As'ad
With 30 years of journalism experience, Shuruq As'ad is a pioneering journalist and media trainer based between Jerusalem and Ramallah. She made history as one of the first female journalists and TV anchors on Palestine TV (PBC) after its establishment in 1994 following the Oslo Accords. Shuruq has worked as a correspondent for renowned Arab TV Channels such as Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, LBC, Nile News, and is currently the correspondent for Dubai TV in Palestine and Israel, covering a wide range of hard news stories and features from Palestine. She is also the correspondent for MCD -Radio Montecarlo Addoualiya (France), and the radio representative in Palestine. Her work has covered hard news including demonstrations, intifada updates, Israeli invasions, Palestinian prisoners stories and swaps, Israeli war on Lebanon in 2006, more than five Israeli wars on Gaza, Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, and interviews with political, social and cultural figures. Fatemah Farag
Fatemah Farag is the founder and CEO of Welad Elbalad Media, a company dedicated to community media development and media excellence in Egypt. She is a World Editors Forum Board Member and has been the MENA Director for WAN-IFRA’s Women in News Program, a WAN-IFRA Executive Committee Board Member and a Neiman Fellow. Prior to Welad, Fatemah was the founding chief editor of the English Edition of Al Masry Al Youm. Before 2009, she divided her professional time between the newsroom and journalism training and media education.
Zahera Harb
Dr. Zahera Harb is Chairperson of Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism and International Journalism Cluster lead at City, University of London. She has published widely on Journalism and Politics in the Arab countries. Her publications include an edited collection entitled Reporting the Middle East: The Practice of News in the Twenty First Century (IB Tauris 2017). She is co-editor of Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication and associate editor of the internationally renowned academic journal Journalism Practice. She is currently board member trustee of Dart Centre Europe for Journalism and Trauma and board member trustee of Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network. She also sits on the board of the UK Press Recognition Panel. Zahera previously served as member to the UK broadcast regulator Ofcom content board and board member/trustee of the Ethical Journalism Network. Before moving to the UK, Zahera worked, for many years, as a broadcast journalist in her native country Lebanon, for local and international news organisations.
