This panel will explore the effectiveness of transparency in news reporting and media operations as a strategy to combat mis- and disinformation. Experts from The Guardian, Aos Fatos and FT Strategies will share their personal experience of being open with sources, data, methodologies and editorial decisions as well as the risks and potential pitfalls of doing so. Together, they will try and answer the question: what level of transparency can build trust with audiences and help reduce the spread of false information? Moderated by Ben Whitelaw.

With 15 years in the journalism industry, she oversees a team of 20+ professionals, among journalists, developers, OSINT experts, and data scientists divided into three key areas: editorial, technology, and innovation. Tai has been recognized as one of the most innovative leaders in journalism by fundraising, developing, and managing creative projects that tackle misinformation while also publishing relevant investigations on the role digital platforms and politicians play in Brazilian democracy. She leads the team that won the 2020 Gabriel García Márquez Award on Innovation; the 2020 Digital Media LATAM for best digital project; the 2019 Claudio Weber Abramo Brazilian Data Journalism Awards on Innovation; and was a finalist for the 2019 Online Journalism Awards on General Excellence for micro-newsrooms. Ben Whitelaw
Ben Whitelaw is a Manager at FT Strategies and has almost 15 years of experience working with publishers globally. Before joining FT Strategies, Ben was an independent newsroom and content strategy consultant supporting news media across Africa, the Middle East and Europe and worked on a grants programme for the European Journalism Centre. Prior to that, he was Head of Audience Development at The Times and The Sunday Times, where he worked on audience growth and newsroom transformation projects.
