Award-winning pioneer of TikTok journalism Sophia Smith Galer guides you through how to ideate, script and publish content on vertical video platforms. Vertical video - shortform, smartphone-friendly video like Reels and TikToks - is how audiences increasingly consume news around the world, and Sophia has learned in her research that journalists face several obstacles when it comes to platforming their work and engaging in formats dominated by content creators. She herself has had over 140 million views on TikTok, and a few months ago gained 90,000 Instagram followers in just one week using vertical video. Sophia will be revealing exclusive research at the festival about the biggest obstacles facing journalists when it comes to creating videos, as well as demonstrating how AI can support journalists with video making.

Sophia Smith Galer is a journalist, author and content creator based in London. She is the co-host of the BBC World Service's Where To Be A Woman podcast and is a pioneer of TikTok journalism, winning the British Journalism Award for Innovation of the Year in 2021 as well as spots on the Forbes Under 30 and British Vogue's 25 Most Influential UK Women lists in 2022. She has more than 140 million TikTok views and a combined following of 700,000 followers between TikTok and Instagram. She is now freelance following working as a reporter for VICE News and the BBC.
