The war in Gaza has been having a shape-shifting effect on global politics, alongside some of its key references, such as human rights, international law and realpolitik. Global journalism has been equally affected, with media sites becoming part of the battlefield. Independent Arab media have played an instrumental role in providing Arab audiences with critical coverage and analysis on this war, providing news gathering from the frontlines of the war, complex contexts often absent elsewhere and constantly bridging the gap between details and information and what they mean.
How have these newsrooms affected the global media landscape and the coverage of this war? What learning can global and mainstream media derive from the practices of these newsrooms as they cover a highly politically relevant subject to them, namely Palestine. Lina Attalah
Lina Attalah is the publisher of Mada Masr, a Cairo-based news website. She has been a journalist for over a decade, covering primarily Egypt and the region, including the Syrian revolution, the 2013 Iran presidential elections and the Darfur conflict in Sudan. She was previously the chief editor of Egypt Independent, another Egyptian leading English-language news media.
Alia Ibrahim
Alia Ibrahim is a co-founder and CEO of Daraj.com, an independent digital media platform that was launched in November 2017. Before that Ibrahim was a Senior Correspondent at Al-Arabiya News Channel. Since 2015, Ibrahim has produced and directed episodes for Special Mission, a prime-time investigative reporting show. She joined Al-Arabiya in 2008 as a senior roving correspondent. Ibrahim’s opinion and news stories appear in a number of publications including Al-Hayat newspaper, Al-Arabiya net, and until 2011 The Washington Post where she had been a contributing reporter since 2005. She started her career in 1996 as a general news reporter at The Daily Star in Beirut. She became managing editor of the newspaper in 2004. Since 2016, she has been an instructor of Journalism at the Lebanese American University. She is a mother of two girls Yasma 17, and Mia 16.
Michael Jensen
Michael Irving Jensen is the MENA Regional Director at International Media Support (IMS). He has been engaged with programmes and projects in the Middle East for the past 25 years. Over the years he has been a university lecturer teaching contemporary Middle Eastern History and Politics (University of Copenhagen), engaged in cultural production and collaboration, done consultancies for development agencies for years and he has written numerous articles and books focusing in particular on Palestinian politics. Michael has been working with IMS and media development for 14 years. He holds a PhD in Middle East History from University of Copenhagen, an MA in Development Studies from SOAS, London, and a MA in Middle East Studies from University of Copenhagen.
Jean Kassir
Jean Kassir is the co-founder and managing editor of Megaphone, a Beirut-based independent media platform. Megaphone tracks local news to produce explainer multimedia content for digital platforms on the web. It also publishes critical and analytical opinion pieces in formats that reinvent traditional conventions of online writing. Jean holds a Masters in comparative politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
