In an increasingly interconnected world, it is hard to exaggerate the outsize impact of technology on people and policies in our communities. However, most tech journalism is Western-led, focused on the influence and innovation of Silicon Valley and its biggest giants, while most of the world’s population lives outside the West. So does a significant chunk of the global population that interacts and engages with technology on a daily basis. There are thriving tech ecosystems and consequential innovation taking place across Asia, Africa and the Middle East which gets little to no local coverage, let alone international coverage. And when tech in the Global South does get coverage, it is usually relegated to niche sections in niche publications.
This panel will address the state of tech coverage, local and international, in the Global South by bringing together media executives from publications in Asia, Latin America, and Africa to discuss how their newsrooms cover technology, tech policies and the unintended impacts of tech innovation on societies. It will offer diverse perspectives from their regions, challenging the dominance of Western-centric narratives in tech coverage and providing insights into tech ecosystems worldwide.
The panel will discuss how to break tech journalism out of the tech journalism bubble and present the tech story as a story not just about technology but also about policy, public health, and socio-economic issues, among others. The aim of this panel is to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the global technology landscape, amplifying local narratives and bridging gaps in technology coverage around the world.

Srishti Jaswal
Srishti Jaswal is an award-winning investigative journalist based in Delhi, after stints in Paris and Berlin. She has written on various subjects, such as politics, tech, human rights and governance. Her reporting has been supported by Pulitzer Center, International Center for Journalists and National Foundation for India. She is currently the AI Accountability Fellow with Pulitzer Center and the Digital Witness fellow with Princeton University’s Center for Information Technology Policy. She was also an Ochberg Fellow with Columbia University’s Dart Center for Trauma and Journalism in 2023. She is currently working on her debut non-fiction book, Post At Your Own Risk, commissioned by Pan Macmillan India. Her reporting has been honored by the European Commission with the Lorenzo Natali Emerging Journalist Award, Mumbai Press Club and Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Delhi.
Anup Kaphle
Anup Kaphle is the editor-in-chief at Rest of World, an international publication that challenges expectations about whose experience with technology matters. Since its launch in 2020, Rest of World has published over 1,000 stories, primarily written by local correspondents, from more than 100 countries. Prior to joining Rest of World, Anup was the editor-in-chief of the Kathmandu Post in Nepal, where he managed the country's largest English-language newsroom. Before that, Kaphle spent a decade in U.S. newsrooms, including six years at The Washington Post, where he worked on the foreign desk as the digital editor. He ran international news coverage at BuzzFeed News as the deputy foreign editor and led the editorial team at Roads & Kingdoms, an award-winning digital media producing stories at the intersection of food and international reporting.
Yasir Khan
As Editor-in-Chief of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Yasir Khan heads up the Foundation’s digital news platform Context and its global team of award-winning journalists covering the impacts of climate, socio-economic inequality and technology on societies around the world. Prior to this, Yasir held leadership roles at Euronews as Editor-in-Chief of Digital Platforms and at Al Jazeera English as Head of Digital Video and Podcasts. He has also taught journalism and documentary filmmaking at the American University in Cairo, Northwestern University and the Jordan Media Institute.
