Of all the ways generative AI will impact journalism, one of the most intriguing is a potential shift from the written to the spoken word. Artificial intelligence is already being harnessed by some publishers to create audio versions of text articles, and clone voices to narrate them. As news consumers spend more time with audio journalism, how do news organisations navigate yet another frontier of innovation? Three leading experts in audio storytelling discuss what’s about to change and what will stay the same.

Brumley was also a freelance reporter and producer for leading podcast and radio outlets including Public Radio International and the BBC World Service.

Ezra Eeman is Strategy and Innovation Director at NPO, the Dutch Public Broadcaster. Ezra has more than 20 years of experience in media, innovation and journalism. Previously he was Change Director at the international media company Mediahuis, where he was responsible for coordinating newsroom transformation and digital acceleration across a wide range of cross-media brands. Before that, Ezra was the Head of Digital at the EBU, The European Broadcasting Union, worked as head of an innovation lab at VRT, the Flemish public broadcaster, and was a journalist and editor-in-chief at the Flemish commercial broadcaster VTM.

Mark Little
Mark Little

Mark Little is a media entrepreneur and former journalist. He founded the social news agency Storyful and co-founded Kinzen, which used AI and human expertise to detect harmful online content. In 2022, Kinzen was acquired by Spotify, where Mark is now a strategic adviser. Mark also worked for Twitter as a VP of Media Partnerships. He began his career as a foreign correspondent for Ireland’s public service broadcaster RTE.

Lena Beate Hamborg Pedersen

Lena Beate Hamborg Pedersen works as a senior product manager at the national Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. For the last two and a half years she has led experiments using AI to translate news articles into several languages, and developed a Norwegian cloned voice reading the news. Before Lena moved over to a role in product management 10 years ago, she had a long career in journalism both as a radio news presenter, producer, executive producer, reporter and documentarist.
