The open internet -- the information commons -- is being fenced in first by paywalls for readers and now for machines. The New York Times is suing OpenAI as publishers and legislators argue that AI companies should have to pay just to read and learn from content. Should machines and their owners have the same rights to read and learn from each other that journalists and news organizations have? If copyright is expanded and fair use shrinks, what are the implications for the internet and the information ecosystem? Norwegian publishers are collaborating to build a large language model for the country while American publishers are fighting AI. Is AI the enemy?
