Despite wide-ranging debate about AI and its impact on journalism, there has been little discussion on the ways that AI technologies can be used to improve the safety of journalists, especially those who are under-resourced. This session dives into that subject and introduces an AI safety tool that is currently being developed by the ACOS Alliance and the Journalism Protection Initiative at CUNY’s Craig Newmark School of Journalism. Does AI have the potential to revolutionalise journalist safety?

Mike Christie

Mike Christie is a veteran international journalist who ran editorial safety at Reuters for almost a decade until the end of 2023. He has since set up a journalist safety consultancy, Lechosa LLC, to help media organizations protect their newsrooms against physical, digital and emotional threats. He also designs and runs hostile environment training courses.

Gina Chua
Gina Chua

Gina Chua is Executive Editor at Semafor, a new global news startup. Prior to joining Semafor, she was Executive Editor at Reuters, where she oversaw newsroom operations, logistics, budgets, safety and security, and worked with technology teams to develop newsroom tools, among other responsibilities. Gina was also the editor-in-chief of the South China Morning Post and The Asian Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong; a deputy managing editor at The Wall Street Journal in New York; a foreign correspondent in Singapore, Manila and Hanoi; and a television and radio journalist in Singapore. She co-founded the Sigma Data Journalism Awards and was the inaugural recipient of the Online News Association’s Impact Award for her dedication to innovation. She sits on the boards of the Pulitzer Prizes, The 19th, the Tiny News Collective, and the International Fund for Public Interest Media. A native of Singapore, she graduated with a bachelor’s in mathematics from the University of Chicago and a master’s in journalism from Columbia University. Gina transitioned in late 2020.

Nikita Roy
Nikita Roy

Nikita Roy is a data scientist, journalist, media entrepreneur and AI expert. She hosts the globally acclaimed Newsroom Robots podcast, which has ranked among the top technology podcasts in over 30 countries on Apple Podcasts. It is regarded as a "space for the news industry to actively discuss AI." Her digital news startup, The NRI Nation, has been incubated at Harvard Innovation Labs, is a two-time semifinalist at the Harvard President's Innovation Challenge, and has received the Harvard Innovation Lab's Spark Grant. Nikita has been a part of the International Center for Journalists' News Innovation Lab and the Google News Initiative Startups Lab. She was spotlighted as a notable Canadian youth founder and was selected for Canada's League of Innovators Accelerator in 2022. She is the President of the Canadian Association of Journalists - National Capital Region chapter.
