Attraversare il “muro” digitale della Bielorussia: come Zerkalo.io e Nasha Niva sfruttano la tecnologia per portare notizie a un pubblico difficile da raggiungere

Belarus’ media environment is among the most restrictive in Europe with the state using physical, digital and legal measures to control the information space and to ensure high levels of state propaganda and Russian disinformation penetration. However, despite the fact that since 2021 most news outlets have operated from exile, they retain the reach and trust of their audiences inside Belarus. This is a unique situation not only in Europe, but also in the world.
The workshop aims to present specific solutions used by the Belarusian media in exile in reaching their audiences through a digital curtain erected by the Belarusian authorities. This workshop will be interesting for those media who operate in restricted environments or those who would like to learn more about the media situation in Belarus. Zerkalo.io will present its solution – a cloud-based mirror service, which is tailored specifically for publishers and news media. Nasha Niva will showcase its solution in reaching audiences inside Belarus through the use of platforms and recommendation services.

Natalia Belikova is the СEO of the Belarus in Focus Information Office and acting director of the Press Club Belarus, based in Warsaw. Natalia, a trained international lawyer, has over 15 years of progressive professional experience in media development from the perspective of both a donor and an implementing agency. She worked for UN, OSCE and consulted various NGOs and businesses. From 2011 Natalia worked closely with Yuliya Slutskaya as Programme Coordinator at Belarus in Focus Information Office, a Warsaw-based non-governmental organization founded in 2011 and specialising in Belarusian media.
Aleksandra Pushkina
Aleksandra Pushkina is Director of Zerkalo.io (formerly TUT.BY, the largest media outlet in Belarus, which was read by every third person in the country before it was crushed by the authorities). Now she is in charge of strategy of communication and is the company's public speaker. During 2020-2021 she was responsible not only for PR, but she also worked closely with journalists at the protests. She is one of the managers who rebuilt and restarted the media. Zerkalo.io now reaches 33,000,000 monthly views, sections are gradually being rebuilt and the number of news releases is growing.
Nasta Rouda
Nasta Rouda is director of one of the oldest independent socio-political publications in Belarus, Nasha Niva. More than 10 years in journalism. At different times, she was a reporter, editor, and head of the marketing department, and since 2021, she has been director. Since 2019, she has also been the host of the YouTube interview channel TOK | TALK, one of the Nasha Niva channels.
