While the crisis in the business of journalism only deepens, there is a growing opportunity to embrace a new path. And it's an exciting, innovative and lucrative one. Consumers are abandoning traditional news brands at a rapid pace. What is replacing that is a confidence in, and willingness to pay for, individuals they trust. Journalists have an incredibly bright future if they can embrace and monetize the creator economy.
The change we are currently witnessing is independent creators overtaking the traditional legacy news brands. This will continue, and news content creators - podcasting, on monetization platforms, on YouTube - will become the main platform for news, and traditional legacy orgs will become the smaller, secondary market. In the US, 60 per cent of 16-40 year olds already pay for or donate to the news in some format, but they are TWICE as likely to pay for the content if it comes from an individual news content creator than a brand (American Press Institute 2023 report).
The content creator economy is predicted to be worth half a trillion dollars by 2027 (Goldman Sachs). What steps do journalists need to take to get a piece of that pie? We will discuss how to get started, how to build an audience, monetize it, and do quality work as your own boss. And how will this change journalism? What are the opportunities and risks? And will this usher in a new golden age for local journalists all over the world to reach a global audience?
